Request: Marshall Guv’nor

Here’s another request I’ve had on my list for a while; the Marshall Guv’nor. Not sure what to say about this one. I’m guessing it’s an overdrive of sorts and it probably sounds nice.

Update (06.04.2014): Verified as working, thanks to Jsiam!

  1. Hi my friend! i build this layout last week and sounds great!
sounds like my marshall amp (avt 100) overdrive channel!

  2. Ok! Now it’s cranking. Cold solder joint was the issue on C6. Thanks for your help Harald and all the awesome layouts you do.

  3. Hi Warren. Sounds a bit strange that you’re not getting any grit at all. I would assume this effect would be capable. There could be a mistake in my layout or the schematic I based it on, but I would start with some quick debugging; look for solder bridges, cold solder joints, missing/misplaced cuts or components, etc. to make sure there’s no obvious mistakes. If I don’t get any other feedback on this one I might try to build it so I can help figure out what the problem is.
As for D1 you should leave it as is. It’s not in the signal path and contributes nothing to the sound, but rather it’s a protection diode. It does nothing as long as you’re running the effect like you’re supposed to, but if you try to power the effect with a reverse polarity DC it acts as a short circuit, possibly dying, but saving all your other components from doing the same.

  4. I built this and it work, but I’m not getting any break up from it unless I switch to the bridge position pickup, then there is a little. It has great tone control though. D1 didn’t seem to do much but I’m still messing with it to see if I can get some grit out it. I will update as I make progress. Thank you for these layouts, it’s a lot of fun!

  5. Awesome thanks for putting this up I’ve been waiting for this one for ages. I will try and report back asap btw it was most famously used by Gary Moore from thin lizzy very bluesy overdrive
